Mr. Clean
As some of you know or have seen, I decided to shave my head. Part of the reason to undergo this was that I wanted a change in my life and I figured this would be the time to do it. Also one of my good friends did it and he said it felt awesome.
However the main reason I did it was to regain control. As most of my friends know, I have been losing my hair for as long as I can remember. I remember when I got my first bucket of gel in junior high, my mom implored me not to use as she knew what was coming. When I got to high school, I made the mistake of joining the swim team and water polo team - I still had a think head back then and in restrospect, I was merely laughing at fate. Jumping in the pool filled with chlorine and other harsh chemicals proved not to be the best decision.
In any case, it was not till college did people, my male friends in particualar, go out of their way to point out that I am losing hair. The annoying part of this is that men who are losing their hair know they are losing their hair - they dont need anyone to remind them. What is incredible is that people feel very open and unashamed to tell me that. However, if I were to go up to a fat person and say, "Man you are fucking fat - did you know that?" people would call me rude and insensitive. Or if I were to go up to a girl and tell her that her mustache is getting thicker I would get slapped. Go figure.
Of course, there is no appropiate response to that comment. If I act surprised, then they will go out of there to actually poke my head to show me exactly where it is getting then. If I say I know, then each person with hair feels like they have the authority to tell me how to regrow it. You would not believe some of the advice I have gotten as to how to regrow hair. From not using shampoo and washing with almond oil, to eggs to other shit. People have even recommended transplants or wigs.
First of all to be absolutely clear, hair loss is 100% genetic. It comes from your mom's dad. So if your moms dad is bald, it is very likely that you will be bald as that. It is as simple as that. It is not a matter of "if" but "when". I unfortunately come from a long line of bald men and thus I was quite happy to escape college with a somewhat full set of hair.
I think it is more appropiate to make fun of a fat person because that is something each individual person can control. One can work out more, one can eat more healthy, one can drink less. However, there is nothing I could do to grow more hair short of taking pills (that have side effects that are not worth it) or wearing a wig or transplants.
Each of those options are unacceptable to me. What use is having a head of hair if you are impotent? And wearing a wig or getting a transplant or just vain coverups and NEVER look natural. It is so easy to spot whose wearing a wig and I actually feel bad for them that they feel have to go on in life wearing fake hair with glue everywhere to feel normal. At the end of the day when they go to sleep, they are still bald. They are posers.
So what did I do? I got over it. Sure I miss being able to style my hair in some cool ways, but at the end of the day its just hair. With all the problems in the world, I am simply not that selfish to think my life is over because I dont got it. I think the vet coming home with one leg would rather have his leg than his hair. Plus at the end of the day, a shaved head is super easy to maintain - getting ready is a breeze and I never have hat hair. In the end, I feel a bit more confident that I confronted it head on rather than fearing it.
So what has been the response? So far people have given me props and compliements. My grandparents were a bit curious that I got a second "munan", parents were cool with and most of my guy friends have said it looks good. Of course, all the white boys call me mexican but I am okay with that.
I found this video by my boy, LD, and I thought it was hilarious.
