Rang de Basanti

“I want to stay in university forever. Around here, I am someone – people know me. In the real world, I am just another guy..” – line from MRB

I bought this movie and over the course of the wknd, have managed to watch it 3-4 times. The portrayal of Indian students in college, the clubs there were all accurate. Even the portrayal of the BJP / RSS clan over there. As many of you made fun of me, I grew up RSS. Went to RSS camps learning why Islam should not be tolerated in India, since they wanted a separate state in 1947. I learned how to fight in case the RSS army ever needed me. We used to hold RSS “radicals” at our house and allowed them to use our house as a place where they could preach.

In any case, as I grew up I was pretty much aligned with the ideas of the RSS. In college I really did not know any Muslims (aka Slims) especially since MSU was very exclusionary. In any case it was not till after college and I got laid off did my ideas change. I started to roll with a bunch of Slims in la who all lived in arcadia, as this was the crew my boy Vijay rolled with. While these guys were the founding members of PCP and belonged to other notorious gangs, they turned out to be a stabilizing force in my life. While they all used to party like crazy, by the time we started to kick it, all of them for the most part had stopped drinking, and thus I did to. Instead we had pool nights and bowling nights, and spent hours debating religion. They were the ones who convinced me to cutback on the training, and not to focus on getting ass, but focus on doing the right proper thing.

Some classic lines – “Why do you spend so much time loving the Lakers. They don’t love you”

“What goes around comes around… if don’t sacrifice know, you will get a wife who has played around. “ I was escastic as I have not ass in years, so hopefully I will get a wife similar to Celina Jetly.

It was a definite change in my life – and at this point, I began to see that the ideals of the RSS and BJP are hardcore. Funny enough, when I was in India, the head of the BJP landed on the flight after me, and I saw him and the welcoming party that was setup for him. The fact that a lot of these guys believe that they are doing what Ram or Krishna wanted disgusts me.

In any case the songs in the movie, the friendships shown, and the evolution of the characters make this definitely a movie I will not let anyone borrow, as we all know how that goes. This movie pushes the importance of finding your passion…. Making a difference – finding that one thing, or that one person who you are willing to lay everything for. As put in “The Girl Next Door” that you know for sure that the juice is worth the squeeze.

While we all may be hardcore sports fans, we all know we would never die for our team. Would we die for family? Would we do die for our friends? Which ones? Your girl? The girl who you think are destined for, but does not pay any attention to – would you really push yourself for that.

I think movie shows that you don’t know what you the one thing is… we all know tony soprano would do anything for his family…In another movie I watched this wknd, Zinda, Sanjay Dutt says (I know you are all saying if he is the best person to quote, but whatever) “You don’t get to choose your brothers or family. You get to choose your friends- therefore they should be more impt to.” Now I don’t totally agree with this statement, but I agree on one side point. You should choose your friends, and not let your friends choose you.

Lastly, I loved the point about there are 3 type of people when they die…. Ones who are scared and silent, ones who are scared and yell, and ones who laugh……BTW, did anyone else want to nail Sue. White girl who speaks Hindi….better than a yoga teacher…..

I would love to hear your thoughts about this movie…

PS. I just spent the whole day with a gay dude on a class called leveraging your impact, so this is where all this sappiness comes from
