Dont call it a comeback...

I have been here for years...

I wish I could say I knew that line by heart..but alas I grew up with zero sense of pop culture and thus I had to look it up on wikipedia. Unlike most of my friends, I also have zero sports trivia knowledge and did not listen to bon jovi, metallica, or red hot chili peppers till college. In fact, the first CD i bought was Bryan Adams "So Far so good" and when I tried to be hard, I picked up Warren G.

Anyhow, truthfully it has been awhile and putting a new post has been on my things to do for months now. I always like writing but I am beginning to think there is something nice about having a little mystery in your life. Unlike most people, I am beginning to think social networks like Facebook are actually not bringing people closer together, but it is in fact driving people far apart. I already interviewed and got dinged from FB so I dont have to worry about the ramifications, but let me explain.

By putting more and more things online, whether it be your travel plans and pics, where you are every two minutes, and all your pics and thoughts via twitter, I feel like I have caught up with a person without ever actually talking to them - and I think this is NOT progress. This is fine for random people you meet, but really how does this drive communication. This has happened to me at several weddings where a person tries to tell me about their past four months and truthfully I am bored. I was excited to see the pictures online or read @ their adventures via fb, but in person I am like "ok, I know about this already." Further, on FB if I hit "like" on a comment you post, does this mean we are closer buddies or that our friendship has grown - does replace the phone call or the aim chat, or even more old school catching up with a friend at a bar.
To be clear, I love all these social networks as I like spying on people that I really are not my friends. Of all the "friends" that are on FB, I want to say 30-50% are ones I actually would email or call.

Additionally, I feel like FB has become such a grand marketplace that one really can't be themselves on FB. I feel like I have to watch what I am posting and saying. Obviously most of my close friends are on there, but alot of my professional contacts and bosses are on there as well. As a result, I can no longer say SUCK IT EASY - I have to shorten it to SIE. And even then I got 10 people saying they like my status saying " I am ready to wear my SIE jersey". 75% of these people do not even know what SIE means...get off of me! That was one example, but you get my drift. I feel people have much better things to do than read my blog, so the only ones reading it are my close homies.

The worst part about it is people spy on you. I had one cat I met at a party and he came up to me and asked me how long I was staying. I told him I dont know, this party is pretty cool. He said he saw that I had 4 other events that I responded to on FB and he was wondering how I would make them all. It would be one thing if a cute girl was stalking me, but instead I have dorky indian dudes following me around. Fuck me.

My last thing on FB - stop taking those fucking quizzes. No one fucking cares which building you represent, or which bollywood actress you likely are, how well you know Person X, etc. If there was a way I never had to see a quiz on my news feed, I'd pay for it. Instead I block each quiz, and 10 more pop you. Incidentally, that guy must be minting it....But on the whole what are your thoughts on FB and social networks? How do you guys use them?

Anyhow, sorry about that rant...had to get a bit off my chest.

The last couple months have flown by since Nicaragua. It seems every wknd I have been out of San Francisco, whether it be weddings in Texas, getting scuba certified in Monterey or bachelor parties or trips to LA. There are some awesome stories that I plan to share in the next few weeks. The next couple months should be great times as well. I got every wknd b/w now and late August booked. Four weddings, two bachelor parties, a high school graduation, a trip to Barcelona/Prague and hopefully Game 6 of the NBA finals...how my sanity, my liver or my savings will survive - i dont know. fuck me.

On a separate note, there are alot of things to bitch about as we get old. Especially if you are like me and still have not found a wife. Outside of drama and weird first dates, there are constant lectures from parents, requests from my grandparents whose only wish in life before they die is to see me married and now my parents have started responding to ads in India Abroad. My dad asked me yesterday to put together a "bio data". He saw some UP girl ad and he called. The girls father called back the next day! The best part was how my dad danced around the subject of my diet and employment. The prospective father in law was like we are very strict vegetarians and its most impt that the groom be vegetaraian. My dad knows I am not, so he said " he has been a veggie growing up and thru college". My dad said technically "i did not lie." I told my dad if she was awesome, I could see myself becoming vegetarian. Of course I would have to end my friendship with yat and rish, who I feel would tempt me like no one's business ..ahah I could see it now. Instead of a strip club for my bachelor party, we would be secretly meeting at a bbq spot..

Anyhow I digress, the cool part of getting older is that alot of your friends starting having kids and the kids begin recognizing you which is awesome. I am known as Gaurav chacha, gaurav uncle but my favorite is when my roomate anan's daughter calls me "uncle g". That's fucking pimp.

nice post man...i think you're spot on re: facebook. not to mention texting, emailing, etc., there's really no reason to talk on the phone with or actually meet up with about 98% of the people i know

dude are you sure your roommate's daughter isn't saying "uncle-ji," as in "bapu-ji"?

not to rain on the parade. i feel you on the fb quizzes, which i will never do, and i think the 6-8 people i call/email/IM/text are my friends and the other 400 are random acquaintances whose profiles i like to check out when i'm bored.

Yep, you are right. I would disown you.

Btw, you are missing the point of Facebook. If I had to talk to you face to face, I couldn't be multitasking with my 5 other favorite hobbies: posting a tweet, reading a blog, editing a wiki, tracking my friends via Latitude, or downloading my new iPhone app. I'm all about social now. It's the new Wave. You are stuck in the 90s buddy.
