Another Day, Another Dollar

When picking up my friend several months ago from his pad, I asked him "How is it going?" to which he responded "Another day, Another dollar."

Now if my friend was a brother living in the hood and living off food stamps, then maybe I could take him seriously. However, my friend is a skinny Indian dude who drives a benzoid and is doing well for himself, so for him to say that is just fucking hilarious. Of course, being a good friend I gave him shit and told all my friends to do the same.

Anyhow the reason I am reminded of that phrase is that today is Valentines Day, if you somehow miraculously missed all the reminders in the news/on TV/ in your email/ on the internet. However, to me it is "Another Day, Another Dollar".

Sure, I may bitter that I don’t have anyone "special" to give overpriced flowers and share a overpriced dinner tonight, but I don’t think I would do anything terribly different on this day. If your favorite joint costs you $120 for you and your girl , does springing $300 for the same meal on this one random day make sense?

I mean ideally I would want a girl, who would want to celebrate V-day two days after, when we can a share a meal 10x better for the same price and I can get her a 5-star suite with an ocean view for the same cost of a bouquet of long-stem roses.

I am not a cheap guju - I just don’t understand why people feel the need to celebrate and monetize their love on this one day. I guess the fundamental problem I have is that women use Valentine's Day to gauge their relationship, which is completely unfair. The below is a post from another blog - which expresses my feelings perfectly.

"It's that time of year again, when women everywhere place overstated expectations on their men, and those men somehow manage to disappoint them.

The thing about Valentine's Day, as far as men are concerned, is pretty simple: We don't care. No matter how much women want us to, no matter how many helpful hints are given, no matter how important it is them...it just doesn't matter to us. I'm sorry, but it doesn't.

No, scratch that. I'm not sorry. I will unashamedly say that I don't give a shit about Valentine's Day. It falls somewhere between Arbor Day and Guy Fawkes Day on my list of noteworthy holidays. I can't force myself to care. The best I can do is transparently fake it. And I'm not alone. Most men will tell you that the only reason they even acknowledge Valentine's Day is because their girlfriend/wife would have an aneurysm if they forgot.

Here is the problem: Men are not romantic by nature. We don't enjoy candlelight dinners, long walks on the beach, Piña Coladas, or getting caught in the rain. It's not our thing, and I'm fine with that. But women aren't, and that brings me to my main issue with Valentine's Day.

Women use Valentine's Day to gauge their relationship, and this could not be more unfair. What if I decided to judge how much my girlfriend cares about me by testing how interested in football she acts? Would this make sense? No matter how convincing she would be, I still know she doesn't really care about the nuances of a Cover 2 defense. Similarly, no matter how "romantic" I act on Valentine's Day, she still knows I am only doing it to avoid a long and pointless fight.

To prove this, I posed the following question to my girlfriend: "What if I didn't acknowledge Valentine's Day at all? If I completely ignored it and made no mention of it whatsoever, how would you react?"

Girlfriend (pouting): I'd be sad.
Me: Why?
Girlfriend: Because you know it's important to me.
Me: Even though you are fully aware that whatever I do is solely because I am somehow obligated to do it because it's February 14th and may or may not have anything to do with how I feel about you?
Girlfriend: Yep.
Me: One more thing...
Girlfriend: Yes?
Me: Can you explain the nuances of a Cover 2 defense?
Her: No...why does that even matter?
Me: I'm wondering the same thing…"

Blast from the Past
I thought it would be interesting to revisit what I wrote last year on this day. The funny thing is everything I wrote last year is still true. I have the same car, and I still am an associate. Only difference is that is so far now nobody has wished me a happy v-day. Fuck me.

"Do you remember when you were a kid or even in high school and you imagined what a pimp you would be when you would be 26? Fly ass cars, girls on your jock by the handful, and making more scrilla than you could imagine. You would be a jet-setter and marked as a future leader of corporate america. In my case specifically, I thought I would be a bomb ass surgeon with a fly girl and a couple on the side.

On Valentines Day you would have a separate girl for breakfast (from the night before), a different one at lunch ( a coworker u were messing with) and a new girl at dinner who would perform the craziest deeds on you. Your place would put the W in check.

Well its funny how life works out. I drive a used 1998 maxima of which of the back 5 windows, only 3 are tinted . I am associate 10 of 2MM and I am spending V-day working on a preso and the only people who wished me a happy v day is my mom and my sister. You know what is scary? I dont mind. Sometimes u just have to laugh at yourself - only way to survive. It could be worse. I could be at the strip club buying some love... (any other night, that is okay. i think v-day though is pathetic.)

Hope all of your v-day celebrations are as good as mine. and remember the golden rule. no not that bs of do unto others - i am talking @ the rock laid down.... There is no sex in the champagne room. ...believe me, I had to find out the hard way"

Well, by some small chance if you still feel like a loser because you are solo today, take pleasure in knowing this guy is much more of a loser and having a worse day than you are:

LOVE the football analogy - v-day is f'in pointless to me, but i'll acknowledge it if/when i'm dating someone who cares about it...offensive philosophies are meaningless to most girls, but i base my life around knowing the difference b/w the west coast offense, run & shoot, etc...why don't we get the same "f*ck it, if it's important to you, i'll acknowledge it" treatment?

all good points. and chin up, yat - i'd say you're better off than costanza, who, as you'll recall, based his life around knowing that the D is the biggest.
