Death of a Cap
Death of a Cap
I am a firm believer in signs. I look for little things that I believe are placed there to guide me. From a certain song playing when I go up to a girl, to taking the path less traveled by, to random things that seem just to coincidental to be random. Maybe this stems from my belief that there is someone out there guiding me, or maybe my belief that we are all connected or perhaps. If the Lakers win, I feel it will be a good night. I know if I pray in the morning, my test or my meeting will go smoothly.
I remember five years ago, when my boys and I traveled to Amsterdam as part of our whirlwind tour of Amsterdam. At this time, I was trying to have a DDLJ moment and meet my Kajol, so I would often ditch my friends and form my own adventure. This was during a time when we all did not have cell phones, so it could be a little dangerous. Nevertheless, I would wander off and just know at some point I would catch up to them.
One time where this failed was in Amsterdam. We were all chilling in the equivalent of Hooters, and then within five minutes I lost all four of my boys. Keep in my mind, we just had arrived that morning and did not have a hostel or anything. At first, I was like whatever and continued exploring. After thirty minutes, I began to get worried as it began to rain. It did not help that I spent a lot of time chilling at a coffee shop beforehand. I sent them an email, but did not get a response. I even went back to the train station to make sure they were not waiting for me there.
At that point, I decided I would just have to trust myself and the fact I would find them. I decided to check out the red light district. While it was an interesting experience, it def was not the same walking around with my boys. I began to get worried as it rained and I was being every drug known to man by random dudes every 2 minutes. I began to walk around the coffee shops, as I knew my boys and figure they would be enjoying some “coffee”.
I remember walking by getting annoyed and frustrated and thought I saw picture of Ganesh. It turned out there was a coffee shop and I stood there wondering what were the chances that there was a coffee shop with an Indian god. And of course right next to the shop were my boys.
Anyhow the reason I bring this up is that last night I decided to wash my blue CAL cap. I have worn this cap for the last five years. It is the only hat I owned. I wore to Europe. I wore it to India. I have worn it to every Cal game I have been to. I remember girls use to ask me to wear it. I wear it while I work out, I wear it out pretty much everytime.
As I packed this morning for my flight to Australia, I decided to wash it because frankly it began to smell. I put it in washing machine and when it came out the bill was exposed and destroyed. At first, I was really pissed off at myself for doing something so stupid. Anyhow, after some consoling, I realized that this was a sign.
The cap represented one phase in my life where beer bongs, boat races and Cal game were an every week activity. Now it is time to begin to start the next phase. I think before I have made claims to be reformed, but I think I was not ready. I think 2007 will be a different year. Of course, I plan to change only after my trip to the Down Under where I plan to live up every minute.
Come on guys, I am still the same ole g.
